Amos Bridge Scholarship Fund

An immigrant to the United States in 1842 at the age of 3, Amos D. Bridge founded Bridgecorp in Connecticut in 1875. The company treated employees fairly in the Merit (open) Shop way – with pay rate based upon what they produced. The company first came to Maine in 1914, with the headquarters finally migrating to Maine during World War II. Bridgecorp was a leader in Maine road construction for 90 years, until sold to Pike Industries in 2004. The people and the equipment continue as part of the Pike Heavy and Highway Construction Division today after merging into the parent company. Pike continues the tradition of ABC membership and involvement. Both Mr. Bridge and Mr. Pike started their companies in the 1870s, and the two remarkable histories are now combined. The Amos D. Bridge Scholarship founder, Amos' great-grandson John Bridge, is a graduate of the University of Maine and was a national officer of Associated Builders and Contractors in the 1980s, when this scholarship was established. John offers the following advice to scholarship applicants: “Remember that entrepreneurship in construction is just as possible today as it was for Amos in 1875.” The Amos Bridge Scholarship Fund was established to support students enrolled in University of Maine’s Construction Engineering Technology program or USM's Certificate in Construction Management, or similar programs relating to management within the construction industry.

Chet Jordan Leadership Award

This scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of Joseph “Chet” Jordan who grew up in Portland, Maine, and spent his leisure time in Patten and Aroostook County, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. His family and friends established this scholarship to celebrate the rich legacy of his leadership in business and civic affairs in his beloved state of Maine. Chet was a visionary thinker who was actively involved with his family, friends, employees and community. A native of Portland, Chet Jordan attended public schools in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School in 1945. During his school years, starting at about age 12, Chet worked part time at the family business “Jordan’s Ready-To-Eat Meats.” After graduation from high school, Chet entered the service, just prior to the end of World War II.  After the war ended, he entered the United States Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, New York, and graduated in 1948 with a degree in marine engineering.  Soon after, Chet went to sea, only to be called back to Portland to reenter the meat business.  This time, to take over the company on the untimely death of his father in 1949.  Chet was 21 at the time. In 1949, the business was a small meat processor, among many on Commercial Street in Portland. Over the years Chet led the company to become one of the largest independent meat processors and distributors in the country.

The Chet Jordan Leadership Award is presented to leaders. Being a great leader means having the ability to turn a vision into reality and to engage others in making a lasting impact on the community. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors at all Maine high schools who are pursuing post-secondary study in a certificate, two-year or four-year undergraduate program at the following schools:

  • University of Maine system
  • Maine Community College System
  • Maine Maritime Academy
  • All vocational/technical post-secondary schools in Maine

Recipients will demonstrate leadership, independent thinking, initiative, hard work, and the ability to rally others to the cause in their communities.

While being a sports team captain or a student government officer are commendable accomplishments, this alone is not the type of leadership the fund seeks to support. However, if you’ve done something truly extraordinary in your leadership role, we’d like to hear from you.

John Bisignano and Bettina Swirkal had two great passions in life: art and each other. There they met and forged a life time of love and devotion. In 1988 they left the city and settled in midcoast Maine where they devoted themselves to each other, their craft and service to their community. In their last years they wrote this statement about their art: “To make art is our way of communicating the abundant beauty of nature. I hope that our art will bring pleasure and awaken keener observation of the simple things around us. It is gratifying that our work allows us to make philanthropic donations to causes that serve others.” They established their memorial fund to support talented young artists who may struggle financially.
