Androscoggin County Scholarships

Anchorage Scholarship for Visual and Performing Arts

The Anchorage Scholarship for Visual and Performing Arts supports graduates of SAD 52 high schools, currently Leavitt Area High School, who are pursuing a degree in visual or performing arts at an accredited college or university. There is a preference for residents of Leeds.

Annette M. Brown Scholarship Fund

Annette M. Brown was a teacher in the Lewiston-Auburn area in the early 1900s. In her 1916 will, she left $16,000 to establish a scholarship fund for needy students. Since then, the fund has given thousands of dollars to Androscoggin County students pursuing higher education. Today, the selection process is handled by a committee of former members of the Maine Community Foundation’s Androscoggin County Committee.

The Annette M. Brown Scholarship Fund provides support to residents of Androscoggin County pursuing a post-secondary degree at a two- or four-year college. Eligible applicants must demonstrate a level of academic achievement suitable for predicting success in college, strong character and family values, and financial need as shown by a Federal Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $5,000 or less. Preference will be given to applicants who will be in the first generation of their family to attend college in the United States. In addition, there is a preference for students attending accredited colleges in Androscoggin County, with secondary preference to those attending schools elsewhere in Maine. Applications from students attending school outside of Maine will be given the lowest priority.

Donald C. and Ruth A. Webster Scholarship Fund

Donald C. and Ruth A. Webster were members of the Class of 1935 of Edward Little High School. Their children established this scholarship fund to encourage students to pursue their academic goals. The Donald C. and Ruth A. Webster Scholarship Fund provides renewable support to a graduating senior at Edward Little High School pursuing post-secondary education at a two- or four-year college or university. Eligible applicants will demonstrate financial need, solid academic performance (minimum GPA of 3.0), the ability and determination to succeed in college, and active citizenship in school and/or community.

Donald W. Webber Scholarship Fund

The Donald W. Webber Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 by the partners of the law firm of Linnell, Choate and Webber and his friends and family. Justice Webber was born in Auburn, graduated from Edward Little High School in 1923 and from Bowdoin College in 1927. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1931, he returned to Maine to practice. He was named the youngest justice to the Maine Superior Court at age 41 and later became an associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine. Beyond his legal and judicial practice, Justice Webber was active in other aspects of the community, serving as president of the Kiwanis Club and chairman of the United Way Campaign. He was a charter member of the Community Little Theater and a deacon and teacher with the High Street Congregational Church. The Donald W. Webber Scholarship Fund provides scholarship support for graduating seniors at Edward Little High School who are attending a four-year college. Recipients in good academic standing are invited to apply for renewal consideration for their sophomore year.

Eileen P. Foley Scholarship Fund

The Eileen P. Foley Scholarship Fund was established with a bequest in 2019 to support students who graduate from Lewiston High School, Maine, to pursue post-secondary education. There is a preference for students who are the first generation from their family to attend a university and/or college. Financial need and conscientiousness of applicants will also be considered.

ELHS Scholarship Fund

MaineCF partners with Edward Little High School to offer the ELHS Scholarship, which provides support to graduating seniors who will be attending an accredited higher education institution including but not limited to college, tech school, and/or advanced training centers. Students must be residents within the geographical location of Auburn, Maine as described by the following: the section of Auburn from the Turner line along the west bank of the Androscoggin River, south to Stetson Road and along both sides of Stetson Road, west to the shore of Lake Auburn, and north along the shoreline to Townsend Brook and the Turner line.

Geiger/Montello Scholarship Fund

This renewable scholarship fund was established in 2008 to encourage students of Montello Elementary School in Lewiston, Maine, or its successor agency, to aspire to higher education by providing renewable support to pursue post-secondary education at a two- or four-year college. Eligible recipients will be graduating high school seniors who attended Montello Elementary School for a minimum of three (3) years, with a preference for students who were enrolled in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Eligible students need not have graduated from a Maine high school, but do need to be enrolled full time and demonstrate:

  • financial need
  • the ability to succeed in college with preference for hard-working students not necessarily ranked at the top of their high school class
  • well-rounded participation in school and community activities. In particular the committee seeks students who eagerly devote more than the minimum required amount of time to their activities and who are multi-faceted.

Previous Geiger/Montello Scholarship recipients in good academic standing are invited to submit their fall transcript and a letter to the committee about their experiences at college for renewal consideration for the upcoming academic year by May 1 to:

The Leeds Scholarship Fund supports a graduating senior at Leavitt Area High School who resides in Leeds and is pursuing post-secondary education at a college, university or community college.

Paul Stephen Friedler Scholarship Fund

The Paul Stephen Friedler Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 by his family and friends in memory of Paul, a member of Lewiston High School Class of 1955. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors of Lewiston High School who have an interest in music, science and/or philosophy who are pursuing post-secondary education. Financial need and academic achievement will be taken into consideration.
