New scholarship supports LGBTQ+ and allies

Betsy Parsons

A new scholarship held at MaineCF will support LGBTQ+ individuals and allies pursuing post-secondary education.

The Parsons Scholarship Fund for LGBTQ+ Youth and Allies was created to honor the life of Betsy Parsons, a longtime English teacher in Portland schools who died in 2019. An advocate of LGBTQ+ issues, Betsy helped launch the Southern Maine Chapter of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) and helped create 90 Gender and Sexuality Alliances, (previously Gay-Straight Alliances or Gay-Straight Transgender Alliances) across Maine.
