Daniel Cardillo Charitable Fund
The family, friends and admirers of Dan Cardillo, a compassionate young man with a true love of life and its possibilities, established the Daniel Cardillo Charitable Fund in 1999. Dan was a junior Olympic skier, an avid fisherman, a serious student, a gifted artist, and an exceptionally kind human being. He lived life fully and attacked all of his challenges with a passion that has become legendary. He encouraged others to do their personal best and reach for their goals.
This fund celebrates Dan’s passion for life and his friends by encouraging others to achieve their personal best. Scholarship assistance will be provided to young people pursuing their artistic, academic, athletic, and vocational or life’s passion outside of the traditional school environment (e.g. experiential education, summer programs, or studies, special athletic instruction). Eligible applicants must clearly demonstrate a need for financial assistance, a commitment to their passion, and compassion for others.

Cooper E. King Memorial AFS Scholarship
The Cooper E. King Memorial AFS Scholarship was established with the support of family and friends in 2006 to commemorate Cooper's life by helping a high school student gain an understanding of life and people in other countries through the AFS program. Cooper was a young man, gifted musically and artistically, who spent the second half of his high school senior year in Belgium as an AFS student. Cooper was able to thrive immersed in Belgian culture, language, education, and family life. He made friends based on respect and mutual appreciation, not ethnicity or nationality, and returned home confident and inspired by his achievement. This fund supports eligible high school students enrolled in an AFS School Program. Preference will be given to students for whom the experience promises to be life-changing, those students who have not traveled widely or experienced life beyond their community. Geographic priority in order of preference is: Ellsworth High School students, Sumner High School students, residents of Hancock County, and, lastly, residents of Maine. There is no application for this scholarship. The recipient will be chosen annually from the pool of Maine high school students who have been accepted into an AFS School Program.

Hugh and Elizabeth Montgomery Scholarship
Both Elizabeth (Betty) and Hugh Montgomery had their roots in Phillips, Maine. Betty was born in Phillips and attended schools there, and Hugh summered there in the old farmhouse that belonged in his family. They both went to college, Betty to Simmons and Hugh to Harvard, and pursued careers as librarians. Their wish was that this fund would provide the opportunity for deserving students of Franklin County to receive financial assistance towards furthering their education. This renewable scholarship supports Franklin County adult learners(students beyond high-school age) returning to school to continue their education at the post-secondary level. Preference is given to students for whom a scholarship would make a significant difference in their ability to attend school. First-time applicants need not be enrolled in a degree-granting program but are encouraged to make that commitment before applying for renewal consideration.

The committee is looking for applicants who have encountered circumstances that required uncommon tenacity, focus, hope, and humor, and/or who are choosing to pursue a meaningful life change that requires additional education. These applicants demonstrate a determination to succeed, are serious about learning, and have a plan (academic and financial) to achieve their goal.
