Scholarships to Attend Aspirational or Non-Traditional Programs

Daniel Cardillo Charitable Fund

The family, friends and admirers of Dan Cardillo, a compassionate young man with a true love of life and its possibilities, established the Daniel Cardillo Charitable Fund in 1999.  Dan was a junior Olympic skier, an avid fisherman, a serious student, a gifted artist and an exceptionally kind human being.  He lived life fully and attacked all of his challenges with a passion that has become legendary.  He encouraged others to do their personal best and reach for their goals.

This Fund celebrates Dan's passion for life and his friends by encouraging others to achieve their personal best. Scholarship assistance will be provided to young people pursuing their artistic, academic, athletic, and vocational or life's passion outside of the traditional school environment (i.e. experiential education, tuition for summer programs or studies, special athletic instruction).  Eligible applicants must demonstrate a need for financial assistance, clearly demonstrate a commitment to their passion, and demonstrate a compassion for others.

James and Marilyn Rockefeller Education Fund

James and Marilyn Rockefeller of Camden have established a fund at the Maine Community Foundation offering residents of Knox, Waldo and Washington Counties “An Opportunity to…?”

The goal of the Rockefeller Education Fund is two-part: to build aspirations of K-12 students by partnering with schools in the three counties and to encourage residents under the age of 35 to pursue their passion for post-secondary learning, wherever it takes them, through a scholarship program.

“A lifetime is not much time to fulfill one’s dreams,” the Rockefellers note;
“Education and experience are good stepping stones to that goal.”

The Rockefeller Education Fund will make grants to support educational partnerships that demonstrate the promise of raising the aspirations of K-12 students in Knox, Waldo and Washington Counties. These partnerships are between the Maine Community Foundation, representing the Fund, and K-12 schools/districts in the three counties.

Grants are intended to encourage school personnel to be educational innovators, committed to planning and implementing a project that will build the aspirations of their students. The project may be a one-time opportunity a teacher has always wanted to try. It may involve a longer-term commitment to contract with an outside organization that specializes in aspirations work. It’s up to the school to decide what will work best for its students.

The Fund invites applications from individual teachers and school systems. The Fund typically awards grants of up to $15,000 per year. Grants may be renewed twice, but the committee expects that the school/district will become a financial partner in the subsequent years. Other funding collaborators are encouraged.

Does your plan take you to college or a different sort of learning setting, perhaps a boat building school, writing workshop, dance studio or…? What’s the best learning environment for you? What opportunity are you after?
