Challenger Scholarship recipients in good academic standing who will be enrolled full-time in the coming academic year are invited to submit a Challenger Renewal application. Guy P. Gannett Scholarship

Gannett Scholars are encouraged to apply for renewal consideration throughout their post-secondary and graduate education. As recipients progress through school, the selection committee expects to see a significant increase in demonstrated intent to pursue a career in journalism. Your personal letter, news story, work samples and recommendation letter are critically important components of your application. Please follow the submission guidelines carefully.

If you would like to be considered for an award, please submit the following materials:

Personal Letter: Please write the Gannett Committee sharing the high (and low) points of your year and your goals for next year. They are particularly interested to learn of your experiences in journalism. There is no required minimum word count, but your letter must be typed. Please remember that grammar, spelling and punctuation do count.

Work Sample: Please send three samples of your best, current work related to journalism clearly marked with your name and date of publication. Please do not send a portfolio. These samples will not be returned. Examples of print media must be:

  • byline printed article or online clipping (published format)
  • camera ready, meaning they are on 8 ½ x 11 paper.
  • byline photo

Examples submitted in any other format will not be accepted.

If submitting video, DVD, or CDs, please send seven copies clearly labeled with your name, TV/radio broadcast date, and transcript of each piece.

Letter of Recommendation Please submit a nomination letter from a current teacher or employer detailing your accomplishments and commitment to journalism. Please encourage the individual submitting this letter on your behalf to make their remarks specific to the Guy P. Gannett Scholarship.

Your Renewal Request must also include:

  • A copy of your most recent school transcript showing GPA to date. A printout from the internet is not acceptable.
  • A copy of your complete Federal Student Aid Report (SAR), which must include your expected family contribution (EFC) and your family’s adjusted gross income (AG). Do not send the FAFSA.
