In addition to activities aboard the region’s only remaining gundalow, students explored the 18th century warehouse to see examples of cargo, such as barrels, salt marsh hay, bricks, timber and granite, that would have been carried by gundalows.

In the George Marshall Store, Anne Poubeau, director of education for the Old York Historical Society, provided students with the unusual opportunity to look closely at artifacts from the museum’s fine maritime collection, and to identify historical objects such as a chip log, a fid, harpoons, an oil lamp and a lobster gauge.

A $4,500 challenge grant from the Cummings Fund, the MaineCF Fund, the Pine Tree Fund and the Rural Grants Fund, all component funds of the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Program, helped support the program.

The Old York Historical Society is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the history of the York Region for the education and enjoyment of the public. For more information about programs and exhibits, see www.oldyork.org or call 207-363-4974.

The Gundalow Company is a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 to preserve the gundalow Capt. Edward H. Adams as a platform for maritime history and environmental education programs for school groups and the public on the rivers throughout the Piscataqua Region. For a seasonal schedule of programs and events, visit www.gundalow.org or call 603-433-9505.
