Resources to help nonprofits adjust to the current economic climate

The following organizations, upcoming programs, and web resources may be helpful to your nonprofit as it adjusts and adapts to the challenging economic times facing nonprofits and the communities we serve.

Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP) is a statewide membership organization that provides training, supports advocacy, and makes affordable healthcare accessible for the nonprofit sector. Upcoming training sessions include skillbuilders on governance and leadership, fundraising, and financial management. In addition, MANP offers leadership transition training for boards of directors. Information on all of these programs can be found at their website or by calling (207) 871-1885.

Institute for Civic Leadership (ICL) is focused on building Maine’s civic capacity by developing, convening and supporting community leaders, including those who serve on boards of directors of nonprofits. In addition to ICL’s regular offerings of seminars focused on board leadership, the organization has developed a half-day program, Having the Real Conversation in the Board Room, to help boards productively address the tough issues and questions facing nonprofit organizations today. The Nonprofit Survival Guide for Hard Times offers practical tips and advice on what nonprofits can do to survive financial hard times.

Facing the Financial Crisis: 10 Smart Things Your Board Can Do Now is a helpful article produced by BoardSource, a national organization that supports nonprofits boards through information sharing, training and technical assistance.

Surviving the Financial Crisis: A BoardSource Toolkit is a downloadable toolkit that covers critical financial topics including raising funds in turbulent times; setting policies that keep boards focused; budgeting and other financial controls; dashboard reporting to monitor performance; and spotting red flags and other warning signs. Presented in a straight-to-the-point style designed to help you take immediate action, the 77-page guide is packed with checklists, tips, action steps, quizzes, sample documents, key points to remember, and tough questions boards should be asking. This toolkit costs $25 per downloadable PDF for BoardSource members and $38 for non-members.

Blue Avocado is a nonprofit news magazine for the nonprofit community. Earlier this year, editor Jan Masaoka wrote a blog titled “And Now for Something Different about Nonprofits and the Economy,” which offers candid advice and an uplifting message for nonprofits facing difficult circumstance.

The Bridgespan Group helps nonprofit leaders develop strategies that accelerate social change. Their website offers articles on strategy and business planning.
