The King and Jean Cummings Charitable Trust is no longer making competitive grants.
The trust’s advisory committee has decided to provide grantmaking funds to organizations that support projects and initiatives related to the issues or geographic areas in which King Cummings and his family had an interest.
The committee’s grantmaking now has three main components:
- Grant support for MaineCF county committees. The trust will provide grantmaking funds to the Western Mountains, Piscataquis County, and Washington County committees, as well as to the newly established Penobscot County Committee.
- Ongoing support for existing networks in geographic and issue areas important to King Cummings. In 2009-10, the trust will be supporting the Franklin County Community College Network, the Downeast Nonprofit Network, and the Environmental Funders Network.
- Support organizations important to King Cummings and his family. In 2009, support from the trust will be focused on the South Solon Meeting House and Carrabassett Valley Academy.
The King and Jean Cummings Charitable Trust was established by King Cummings in 1982 and funded at his death in 1989. In 1996, the Cummings Trust transferred its assets and became a component fund of the Maine Community Foundation. A former trustee, Lee L. Cummings of Orono, continues to serve on the fund’s advisory committee, along with Warren Cook of Kingfield, Harold Woodsum of Cape Elizabeth, Cathy Witherspoon of Kingfield, and Cooper Friend of Ellsworth.
