The Maine Community Foundation’s Penobscot Valley Health Association (PVHA) Fund celebrated its 15th anniversary by awarding grants to two Bangor-area nonprofits.
At a reception at the Isaac Farrar Mansion in Bangor, PVHA advisors presented a grant of $10,000 to Shaw House and a $5,000 grant to the Bangor Y’s Interact Leaders Club. “These two organizations exemplify the great work being done to improve the well-being of citizens in the greater Bangor area,” said Dr. Frank Bragg, longtime chair of the PVHA advisory committee.
The Penobscot Valley Health Association was established in 1906 to help Bangor area residents who suffered from tuberculosis. Once the disease became less of a public health threat, the association turned its attention and philanthropy toward more general health and welfare projects. In 1996, PVHA moved its assets to the Maine Community Foundation. Over the past 15 years, the PVHA Fund has awarded more than $1.1 million to nonprofits throughout the greater Bangor area.
Penobscot Valley Health Association Fund grant applications are now being reviewed by the community foundation’s Penobscot County Committee. The deadline for applying is Feb. 15, 2012. For more information about the new PVHA application process, click here or call, toll-free, (877) 700-6800.
