The Chet Jordan Leadership Award is presented to students who are achieving their goals despite hardship, adversity, or disability. Melissa McKenney from Fort Fairfield, winner of the 2012 award, has overcome medical obstacles to pursue athletics and make it her life’s purpose to encourage others. “We can choose to live in joy,” she noted in her application essay, citing the mythologist Joseph Campbell. McKenney is currently attending Eastern Maine Community College and plans to become a medical journalist.
