Winter -- Time to Button Up

For the fourth year running, a team of volunteers and community members led by the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area has been helping Franklin County “button up” for the winter. The Community Energy Challenge received support from several national, state, and local sources, including the Maine Community Foundation’s Western Mountains and Androscoggin County Funds. #GivingTuesday -- Get Ready to Give

On November 27, a national initiative, #GivingTuesday, will be launched. Following the popular Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping days, MaineCF, along with more than 1,000 corporate and nonprofit partners, is encouraging everyone to consider giving on #GivingTuesday -- and using the power of social media to spread the word. The foundation is encouraging residents to invest in Maine through gifts of time or treasure to their favorite local nonprofits or to support statewide projects through its Invest in Maine Fund or county and regional funds. Future Faces of Washington County

Quoqsis and Lennox of Indian Township now have college savings accounts, thanks to the Harold Alfond College Challenge Grant program. More than 130 students opened NextGen accounts at events held in Calais and Machias that were open to all Washington County youth up to age 18. The community foundation contributed the $50 matching funds to establish the accounts. Photo courtesy of Mila Tappan
