John & Ellen Emery Science Grants

Grant Size: $100 to $2,000
Grant Size: $100 to $2,000
Application Deadline: April 30

Background

The John & Ellen Emery Science Grants encourage all AOS #91 teachers to promote the study of science in their classrooms. These grants should increase opportunities for students to understand science and its relevance to their daily lives and, perhaps, inspire some of them to pursue careers in science and related fields. Proposals are invited from full-time teachers working in any AOS #91 school. We encourage teachers in all disciplines to apply for support to integrate science into their curriculum.

Priorities

Grants will be awarded to fund the following:

  • Equipment for science-related projects, particularly for pilot and collaborative programs
  • Classroom library resources for students and teachers
  • Teacher professional development, including AOS #91 collaborative and peer learning opportunities, conference-related expenses, and coursework
  • Curriculum development

Eligibility Requirements

Proposals are invited from full-time, K-12 teachers working in any AOS #91 school. Priority is given to applications from K-8 teachers.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Innovation: What have you always wanted to do but didn't have the money to make happen?
    • pilot projects that enhance standard curriculum
    • Projects that help students learn science in a different way
  • Teaching Impact: value to students; number of students impacted.
  • Collaboration: projects that result in:
    • interdisciplinary projects (i.e. "history of science" or "fishing & the economy")
    • peer learning among teachers
    • partnering with community resources (labs, businesses, individuals)
    • equipment and curriculum sharing
    • cost effective purchasing strategies

Emery generally supports a particular project for up to two years, after which we hope successful projects can be incorporated into the school budget.
