Recent grants from the Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund

The Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund was established by the will of his daughter, Mabel Stewart Daveis, in 1943 to honor her father and to benefit nonprofit organizations serving the Greater Portland area. Mr. Daveis was a member of a prominent Portland family with roots in the community dating back to 1785. After distinguished careers in banking and law, Mr. Daveis became president of the Portland Gas Light Company, one of the first 25 gas utility companies in the United States. He was also involved with the Portland Locomotive Company, a subdivision of the Portland Company. Mabel Stewart Daveis and her sister Mary Gilman Daveis were generous benefactors who supported many local civic organizations.

The directors recognize the critical roles parents and early childhood education providers play to ensure a child’s readiness to enter school on a path to success and the importance of youth leadership programs that help develop aspirations and abilities of our youth. The Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund focuses its grantmaking on Greater Portland organizations and programs that support:

  • Young children aged birth to eight, their families and teachers
  • Youth leadership for students through high school

Collaboration between and among organizations is encouraged. Requests for discrete projects are preferred over those for general operations. A letter from the executive director of the collaborating organization is required to explain the level of involvement. For organizations partnering with schools, a letter from a school official is required.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must meet the Maine Community Foundation’s general grant eligibility requirements. In addition, please note that:

  • Grants cannot pay for program expenses that have already been incurred
  • Grants will not be made to annual funds or endowments
  • Organizations that have received Daveis Fund grants in two consecutive years are requested to wait a year before applying again.

Note: Eligible organizations that have received grants from other Maine Community Foundation funds in the last 12 months are still eligible to apply to the Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund.

Grant Size

Normally, grant awards do not exceed $7,500. It is the intention of the advisors to fully fund requests, as possible.

How to Apply

Apply online using the Online Grant Application tab at the top of the page. Online applications must be completed by October 15 at 11:59 p.m. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions by late December.

Project Progress Report

All grant recipients are required to submit a Project Progress Report approximately 10 months after receiving payment of the grant. Reports are submitted through the online system. Select the Online Grant Application tab at the top of the web page and log into your account to access the form. Organizations that fail to file a progress report will not be eligible for future funding from Maine Community Foundation competitive grant programs for one year or until the missing report is filed.
