Annette M. Brown Scholarship

Annette M. Brown was a teacher in the Lewiston-Auburn area in the early 1900s. In her 1916 will, she left $16,000 to establish a scholarship fund for needy students. Since then, the fund has given thousands of dollars to Androscoggin County students pursuing higher education. Today, the selection process is handled by a subcommittee of the Maine Community Foundation’s Androscoggin County Committee.

The Annette M. Brown Scholarship Fund provides support to residents of Androscoggin County pursuing a post-secondary degree at a two- or four-year college. Eligible applicants must demonstrate a level of academic achievement suitable for predicting success in college, strong character and family values, and financial need as shown by a Federal Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $5,000 or less. Preference will be given to applicants who will be in the first generation of their family to attend college in the United States. Preference is also given to students attending accredited colleges in Androscoggin county, with secondary preference to those attending schools elsewhere in Maine. Applications from students attending school outside of Maine will be given the lowest priority.

Lydia R. Laurendeau Scholarship

This scholarship honors Lydia R. Laurendeau (1918 – 1986), who lived most of her life in Lewiston. Although she was very bright, Lydia was forced to drop out of school in eighth grade to care for her ill mother. When she herself became a mother, Lydia promoted and nurtured education at every turn. When her oldest son showed an aptitude for science, she bought him a book called The Boy Scientist. He treasured this gift and went on to study both science and engineering in college and graduate school, ultimately becoming a professor of engineering. He relished education and learning, as Lydia did, and nurtured it in others who studied under him.

This scholarship provides support for young women who are pursuing post-secondary education in either science or engineering at a four-year university. Eligible applicants are female graduating seniors of Lewiston High School or St. Dominic Regional High School in Auburn. Preference is given to applicants demonstrating a connection to their Franco-American heritage.
